The Island of Rhodes

Ah, Rhodes. Medieval fortress town with it's well used battlements, towers and legendary bronze 'Colossus' that once stood over it's harbour entrance.

It did not disappoint.

The fortification wall still stands around the entire old town.

You enter through a massive gate between a pair of towers with arrow slits and battlements, passing beneath the always useful 'murder hole'.

Mosaics abound and stone staircases lead up the side of buildings to beautiful ornate doors.

An idea of size: it takes about an hour to walk around it.

My love of history has very romantic leanings, so spending the day getting lost, found, and then lost again in this medieval walled town was just heaven.

Near the centre is a castle with an entrance resembling three enormous chess pieces. We took a long walk throughout the rooms inside and I was amazed at how 'dead' the sound was in there, I thought it would be very echo-y, but it was not.

Alex found the kind of fireplace he's always wanted.

Alex in cloisters of the castle.

The island itself is quite large. Lindos, the well known beach area, is over 50km away by road. Many people took a tour that cruised there as well as other places, but Alex & I decided we were happy to just wander slowly around the old town. After being stuck on a (albeit large) boat, the last place I wanted to be was on a bus!

In search of an internet cafe we recieved many polite instructions from kind locals. All of which were contradictory and all of which proved fruitless. We ended up in modern suburbia, then we gave up and tried to find our way back to the old town part.

This failed mission had one good outcome - we meet a lovely old Greek man who, amongst other things, told us we will have 'beautiful babies'.

I've not seen Alex since...

Nothing clever - we just used the basic stuff supplied on goggle blogger. All we did was make our own header & change some fonts.Easy to work with & ties up quite well with Google analytics. Best wishes, Rach.
