We once again skipped the overpriced 'excursion' and set off on our own. It was quite simple as the Athens Metro system is very simple and all the sights we wanted to see were close together. And so...
In the beginning Athens belonged to the Phoenicians, then the Greeks and, for a time, the Romans (or something)...But now Athens belongs to the cats.
Cats sun themselves on the ruins, lording it over hordes of (not stray, it turned out) dogs.
They even guarded the path we found (following a tip off from Hayden & Stasa) that lead up to the Acropolis via a thin winding path between tiny white-washed homes and churches.
The ruins on the Acropolis are being restored to their former glory using a mixture of found pieces, replicating any missing bits.Look's like a lot of fun - if they were 1/100th the size.
Alex & I in front of the famous Parthenon, on the Acropolis.
Not the Parthenon.
The Temple of (umm, H something). Smaller, but very complete.
Restored amphitheatre in the Acropolis. It is currently in use.
Alex on the other side of the amphitheatre.
Don't know what it says - it's all Greek to me.(I say; if it was funny 3000 years ago, it's funny today.)
The temple of Zeus. This was particularly groovy as it was all by it's lonesome in a park, not surrounded like the temples on the Acropolis.
Rachodite - Goddess of the Safety Pin.Discovered that after being worn every day for 3 months, my skirt stitching had worn out, making for exposed bottom...emergency safety pin to the rescue - hurrah!
Those of you with bubbas - how do you like this 2000 year old potty I saw in the Agora.
